“A shower of money from heaven caused this economic miracle," Mateusz Morawiecki said on Friday.

He told a conference in Warsaw that thanks to his ruling conservatives’ “political will, determination, professionalism, responsible attitude … suddenly an extra PLN 30, 40, 50 billion appeared [in state coffers] in total in value-added tax, corporate income tax and personal income tax.”

PLN 50 billion is the equivalent of USD 13 bn or EUR 11.6 bn.

Poland’s conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, which came to power after winning elections in 2015, has launched a crackdown on tax cheats as one way of financing its spending promises.

The ruling conservatives unveiled an ambitious new set of spending pledges during a party convention in late February.
