German Retail Sales Unexpectedly Fall in December
German retail sales dropped by 1.6% month-over-month in December 2023, following a revised 0.8% decline the previous month and missing the market consensus of a 0.7% rise. It was the second consecutive month of decline and the steepest since October 2022, as rising consumer prices and record-high borrowing costs continued to weigh on demand. Food trade was down by 2.8%, and the non-food retail sector saw sales decrease by 1.6%. Year-on-year, retail trade fell by 1.7%, and considering the full year of 2023, it was down by 3.3%, accelerating from a 0.7% contraction in 2022.
