US media sources have claimed special counsel Mueller is on the verge of claiming his biggest scalp yet as he readies an indictment against Donald Trump Junior.

Trump Jr. has reportedly told pals he is worried about being arrested this week following the midterm elections and the firing of top US lawman Jeff Sessions.

The US President fired Sessions after he had been critical of him for failing to stop the Russia investigation.

Thousands gathered in New York last night in support of Mueller amid fears Trump may try to scrap the probe into allegations of election meddling and collusion by his campaign and Russia.

Attorney general Sessions has been temporarily replaced by Trump loyalist Matt Whitaker who has publicly called for the end of the probe.

Mueller has tended to make major announcements over the Russia probe on Fridays.

And it had been speculated he was waiting for the midterm elections to be done before revealing the latest stage of the probe.

Trump Jr. would be the closest figure to the president yet to be roped into the probe – which has already claimed four former advisers to the US President.

George Papadopoulos, Paul Manafort, Rick Gates and Michael Flynn have all been indicted by Mueller.

DONALD TRUMP JR: Could the US President's son be the biggest scalp claimed by Robert Mueller?

Trump Jr. has reportedly been worrying he faces indictment over false statements he made to Congress and the FBI.

He admitted last year he had met with Russian officials promising “dirt” on Trump’s presidential rival Hillary Clinton.

West Wing sources said they are “worried” about Trump Jr as they fear Mueller will be able to snare him on perjury.

Trump himself is also reportedly “very depressed” about the possibility of his son being indicted in the probe – as he continues to insist it is a “witch hunt”.

SPECIAL COUNSEL: Robert Mueller is leading the probe into links between Russia and Trump

Midterm elections saw the Democrats seize control of the House of Representatives which will allow them to frustrate and block Trump’s policy plans.

Republicans did manage to keep hold of the Senate, and Trump has been playing off the election is a big win.

He also warned of a “warlike” response if the Democrats tried to bring forward more investigations into him.

Democratic Coalition chairman Jon Cooper yesterday claimed a DC source had told him Trump Jr.’s "arrest was imminent”.

It is accepted that Russia did attempt to interfere with the US elections – something which Russian president Vladimir Putin denies.

Mueller’s probe looks to establish whether Trump or his campaign actively colluded with them to steal the White House.

Trump furiously refused to answer questions on Russia during a fierce exchange with CNN reporter Jim Acosta.

Acosta was then banned form the White House and accused of “putting his hands” on an intern who tried to wrestle the mic from him during a press conference.
