Russia deploys 25 WARSHIPS to Med amid fears of US attack on Syria

RUSSIA has announced 25 warships are to be deployed to the Mediterranean amid fears the US could be about to stage an attack on Syria.

Russia to hold biggest war games since the Cold War

Russia's defence ministry announced the deployment of the vessels – along with at least 30 warplanes including long range bombers – amid rising tensions with the US.

Moscow has accused the US of planning to attack Syria, alleging a chemical attack will be staged in bid to bring them into the war against dictator Bashar al-Assad.

Vladimir Putin's latest announcement comes following the arrival of ten Russian warships and two submarines in the region – which was already the largest Russian deployment of its kind since the start of the Syrian Civil War.

The ministry said the drills would involve carrying out anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and anti-mining exercises.

Assad is also reportedly planning to launch an offence against the last rebel stronghold in Syria – northern rebel-held region of Idlib.

Russia's latest war drills will be carried out from September 1 to September 8 – with a number of US vessels also currently present in the Med.

Syria has become a major flashpoint between Russia and the West following Putin's intervention in the civil war on the side of Assad in 2015.

It is feared the two sides could enter into a direct military confrontation if the West once against decides to strike the regime.
