German citizens have revealed they are resorting to desperate measures after a spate of incidents involving migrants.

Student Carolin Matthie, 24, claims she was forced to buy a gun after she was stalked by a gang of immigrants when she walking to her university dorm in 2016.

She said it could have had a far worse outcome if she hadn’t been saved by a security car that happened to drive by.

The blogger, who runs a popular YouTube series, immediately went out and paid €50 (£44) for a gun licence as well as a Walther P99 air pistol.

“Now I know what I can do in an emergency, I have a plan if I’m attacked and that feels better,” she told The Irish Times.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been repeatedly criticised for opening the border to millions of migrants.

In 2015, an estimated one million flooded into the country in one of the biggest influxes of people in recorded history.

During the 2015/16 New Year’s Eve celebrations, hundreds of women were sexually assaulted and raped by gangs of migrant men in Cologne – an incident that sparked a massive backlash against Merkel’s open-door policy.

Statistics show the number of people applying for gun licences in Germany has shot up by 75%, with the figure blamed on migrant fears.

Matthie added: “If someone attacks me, it’s immaterial to me if he is German or Arabic, what bothers me is when reporting and statistics play down the origin of the attacker.

“We have a real problem with certain population groups, but because that is air-brushed out, people no longer believe criminal statistics and drift away to fringe parties. And they tar all Turks and Arabs with the same brush."
