Movie theaters, restaurants and yoga, massage studios will be allowed to sell marijuana as regulations take shape in Massachusetts

Movie theaters, restaurants, yoga and massage studios and a wide variety of other businesses in Massachusetts will be allowed to sell customers single-use portions of marijuana under new regulations shaping up within the Cannabis Control Commission.

The much anticipated discussion of "mixed-use" licenses which will allow permitted businesses to provide customers marijuana for use on the premises occurred over a number of meetings this week, bringing new clarity to the picture of the state's nascent legal pot industry.

Although marijuana is legal in a number of western states and Maine, too, no state has yet come up with a means of allowing businesses to provide marijuana to customers for on-site consumption.

According to the state's voter-approved marijuana law, the so-called "marijuana cafe" question about whether businesses would be permitted to sell customers marijuana products was left up to Cannabis Control commissioners.

Under the controls being considered, businesses would have to obtain a mixed use license to sell the substance and could not simultaneously be serving alcohol.

The question of whether customers will be legally allowed to bring their own cannabis to various establishments has yet to be settled.

The Cannabis Control Commission has two more all-day meetings on Federal Street in Boston on Thursday and Friday.
