The Trump administration on Monday asked the Supreme Court to block lower court rulings and allow strict enforcement of a travel ban on refugees from around the world.
Last week, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an earlier decision from a Hawaii judge that said refugees should be allowed to enter if a resettlement agency in the US has agreed to take them in.
The Department of Justice is challenging that ruling but not the administration’s temporary ban on visitors from six mostly Muslim countries.
The Supreme Court in June allowed those restrictions to continue while it considers arguments over whether the action is constitutional. A hearing on that is scheduled for Oct. 10.
Trump administration lawyers told justices on Monday that changing the way it enforces the policy on refugees would allow “admission of refugees who have no connection to the United States independent of the refugee-admission process itself.”
The appeals court decision, which affects about 24,000 refugees, could take effect on Tuesday.
